El proyecto consistía en analizar el perfil de factor de riesgo entre estudiantes de medicina hindúes en la India y compararlo con el de la población de las mismas edades de estudiantes de medicina asiáticos y caucásicos de Gran Bretaña. Los 115 estudiantes de segundo curso, tercer trimestre, de la Escuela de Medicina de MP Shah fueron invitados a participar en el estudio que estaba compuesto por un cuestionario por entrevista, un breve exámen físico, la toma de tensión en ayunas y muestras de orina. Se alcanzó un índice de respuesta global del 84.3%. Comparando los resultados con el estudio anterior se encontraron considerables diferencias entre los asiáticos hindúes y los británicos. La prevalencia del consumo de tabaco y alcohol entre los varones asiáticos de la India era bajo, mientras que las hembras asiáticas hindúes ni fumaban ni bebían alcohol en absoluto. Respecto a la dieta, el 84.6% de los hombres asiáticos de la India y el 100% de las mujeres eran lacto-vegetarianos o lacto-ovo-vegetarianos. Respecto a la constitución corporal, los hombres asiáticos de la India pesaban significativamente menos que los del Reino Unido pero no eran significativamente más bajos. Las mujeres asiáticas de la India eran significativamente inferiores a las del Reino Unido tanto en peso como en estatura. Comparando los perfiles de lípidos, tanto los hombres como las mujeres asiáticas de la India tenían niveles de colesterol total significativamente inferiores, menor nivel de triglicéridos y menor nivel de colesterol HDL que los asiáticos del Reino Unido. Por ejemplo, los hombres de la India tenían una tasa media de colesterol total en suero de 3.67 mmol/l en comparación con el 4.45 mmol/l de los británicos (p<0.001). Paralelamente, los hindúes presentaron una tasa media de triglicéridos en suero de 0.82 mmol/l en comparación con el 1.37 mmol/l de los británicos (p<0.006). En realidad los perfiles de lípidos de los asiáticos del Reino Unido eran muy similares a los de los caucásicos, de forma que, aparte de que los hombres asiáticos del Reino Unido tenían niveles de colesterol total en suero significativamente superiores a los caucásicos, el resto de las diferencias en lípidos no eran significativas (p>0.05). Por tanto parece que las influencias ambientales como la dieta, el tabaco y el alcohol son importantes a la hora de determinar la constitución corporal y el perfil de lípidos. Estos estudios preliminares sugieren que los asiáticos de segunda generación del Reino Unido tienen mayores factores de riesgo de enfermedades cardiovasculares que los de la India.
