Entre las culturas antiguas, los Hindús -tradicionalmente considerados los arquitectos que construyeron los cimientos del vegetarianismo- clasifican los productos lácteos como vegetarianos. Asimismo, los productos lácteos se han clasificado como alimentos vegetarianos porque se presume que no había ninguna violencia ni riesgo para la vida de los animales. Los Jainistas son una comunidad hindú muy ortodoxa y pacífica que no consumen ni verduras de raíz para evitar la destrucción de la planta, ni las verduras o frutas que apoyen la vida parisítica, pero la leche se considera vegetariana, aunque ciertas normas de salud y higiene se aplican en cuanto a la obtención y preparación de la leche una vez que los terneros han tenido su ración. Los productos lácteos no sólo son consumidos libremente por todos en esas comunidades, sino que también sus sacerdotes, santos y sadhus los usan, y se consideran bastante sagrados para servir de ofrenda a sus dioses y deidades en todas las ocasiones sociales y rituales. La aversión a la violencia y la preservación de la vida y el enlace humano inherente en la leche materna son unos conceptos muy importantes para ellos. Por lo tanto, si los productos lácteos no debieran considerarse vegetarianos, el acto de lactar de un bebé sería semejante al canibalismo.
