El incendio devastador en el estado brasileño de Roraima que arrasó 37.000 kilómetros cuadrados de sabanas y selva tropical amazónica, destruyendo valiosa vida animal y un hábitat singular, fue provocado intencionadamente con antorchas estratégicamente situadas por las manos criminales de los ganaderos que queman bosque para ganar pastos y agricultores taladores que esperaban reclamar pérdidas ficticias y beneficiarse económicamente de un nivel de destrucción medioambiental comparable al que destruyó 800.000 hectáreas de preciosa selva tropical en Indonesia. Ambas catástrofes ambientales fueron el resultado de una avaricia humana sin tapujos y de los siniestros métodos de roturación empleados por las empresas madereras para obtener un acceso fácil a áreas de trabajo legales o ilegales. Cerca de la mitad de Roraima (equivalente a la mitad del Reino Unido o un cuarto de España) está ocupada por selva.   Para apreciar el impacto medioambiental de tal destrucción masiva de vida en el delicado ecosistema de la selva tropical, es necesario considerar el enorme número de especies animales y vegetales afectadas en las zonas devastadas por el fuego: un único árbol puede albergar 43 especies distintas de hormigas, y en un par de hectáreas de selva pueden hallarse 100 especies distintas de árboles.  ### Victoria de Howard y Oprah en los Tribunales   El Presidente de la IVU, [Howard Lyman](https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=4321:members-council-howard-lyman&catid=208), y Oprah Winfrey, popular presentadora televisiva americana, fueron declarados inocentes por el veredicto de un jurado federal que les exculpa de los cargos de calumnias contra la industria del vacuno durante un programa sobre [la enfermedad de las vacas locas](https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=6198:science-articles-bse&catid=384), pero permanece la inquietud respecto a las “leyes contra la difamación vegetariana” y las rendijas en las prácticas protectoras de las “vacas locas” por parte de la U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Administración para Alimentación y Medicamentos). En los casos típicos de difamación, el peso de la prueba recae sobre el demandante, pero con las leyes de ámbito alimentario el peso recae sobre la defensa, lo cual podría asustar a los consumidores y grupos educacionales a la hora de entablar sanos debates sobre temas importantes. Desde que el juez dictaminó que los ganaderos no tenían acusación bajo las leyes de ámbito alimentario, la atención se desvió de si tales leyes eran inconstitucionales o no.  Howard Lyman expuso la práctica habitual de alimentar los animales con restos de otros animales, escandalizando a Oprah Winfrey y a millones de americanos, que desconocían que la agencia FDA permitía alimentar con restos de cerdos, caballos y pollos (así como sangre y gelatina de cualquier animal) a cerdos, pollos y otros animales.  ### Inversores atraidos por Esquemas de Crianza Animal Rentables   ![ostrich](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/news/3-98/ostrich1.jpg)    ![emu](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/news/3-98/emu.jpg) El comercio de especies animales exóticas criadas para carne está creciendo a un ritmo alarmante, apoyado por inversores avariciosos sin preocuparse de las necesidades de bienestar del creciente número de nuevas especies explotadas. Criadores europeos de animales como Rainborough Ltd., con sede en Schiphol-Zuid, Holanda, y The Emu Company Ltd. (La Compañía del Emu) de Chipre, están siguiendo los pasos de la Ostrich Farming Corporation (Cría del Avestruz) (acusada de fraude en 1995, después de repetidas ventas de los mismos artículos a distintos inversores). Según la medicina tradicional china, el ombligo está conectado con los órganos vitales del organismo y ciertos elementos de la medicina pueden introducirse en el cuerpo a través de él. ### Culebras ratoneras envasadas como Gambas   ![snakes](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/news/3-98/snakes.jpg) Miles de culebras ratoneras orientales, una especie protegida, fueron interceptadas por un oficial del Departamento Forestal en el aeropuerto Don Muang de Bangkok, Tailandia. Las serpientes, envasadas como gambas, estaban vinculadas al comercio alimenticio de lujo y los puestos de medicina tradicional china, donde alcanzan precios incríblemente elevados. Por otra parte, como resultado de unas quejas sobre el olor pestilente que emanaba de una casa particular en las afueras, fue detenido un hombre en un ataque por sorpresa de la policia de Bangkok acusado de criar serpientes para la venta a restaurantes de Tailandia y del extranjero. Oficiales del Departamento Forestal y del zoo incautaron más de 6.000 serpientes halladas en 45 sacos y 120 cajas repletas de cobras, cobras reales y pitones, así como gran cantidad de otros reptiles destinados al comercio de carne y piel. ### Restos de Elefante hallados en un Parque Nacional Tailandés   Los guardas del Parque Nacional Mae Yom de Tailandia encontraron los restos de un elefante de unos 50 años — que se cree pertenecía a un operador maderero ilegal — al que se le habían extirpado los colmillos, la cola y los órganos sexuales. El animal, aquejado de exceso de trabajo y una severa falta de comida y agua, se cree que se extravió de su lugar de trabajo en busca de comida. Algunos vecinos dijeron que el elefante estaba bajo los efectos de las anfetaminas, proporcionadas por el operador maderero para hacerle trabajar durante más horas transportando troncos de la selva. La intención de la campaña publicitaria nacional de VIA Digital en apoyo de la tauromaquia es atraer nuevo negocio con la promesa de otra nueva temporada sangrienta de corridas para aficionados de sillón.  ![bullfight](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/news/3-98/bullfight.jpg) La temporada de corridas, retransmitida por el canal Gran Via, consiste en una ración diaria inicial de cuatro horas de programación taurina — un preludio hacia un canal temático totalmente taurino — emitiendo programas relacionados con el mundo del toreo producidos por el canal público Televisión Española (TVE), así como algunas de las 2.000 corridas planificadas para 1998 en España, con inquietantes primeros planos de toros torturados y ahogándose con los pulmones perforados, jadeando y sangrando hasta la muerte ante un público “en vivo” de políticos y aristócratas mediocres y fingidos intelectuales con el habitual patrocinio de la madre del rey y la aparición ocacional del propio Rey Juan Carlos, ambos aficionados apasionados. España posee la segunda mayor cabaña porcina de Europa —28 millones de animales— muchos de los cuales comen una mezcla de menudillos de matadero de oveja y vaca añadida a su comida, similar a la que provocó el brote de encefalopatía espongiforme bovina (BSE) en las vacas. ### Incremento Mundial de Cultivos Transgénicos   Según una estimación realizada por productores de semillas franceses, entre 1997 y 1998 el uso de tierra agrícola para cultivos transgénicos o [modificados genéticamente](https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=6200:science-articles-genetic&catid=384) aumentará de 14.2 millones a 35 millones de hectáreas en todo el mundo, con un 88 por ciento de estas tierras situadas en los Estados Unidos, el 6 por ciento en Latinoamérica y el 6 por ciento en los países asiáticos. Para el año 2000 estos cultivos ocuparán 60 millones de hectáreas: el 81 por ciento en Norteamérica, el 8 por ciento en América Central y del Sur, el 10 por ciento en Asia y el 1 por ciento en Europa. De los cultivos de este año, se plantarán 15 millones de hectáreas de soja en los Estados Unidos y 2 millones en Argentina. Otros cultivos modificados incluyen la semilla de colza transgénica (cultivada en Canadá) y el maíz, del cual se cultivará algo en Francia. ### Tributo Internacional al Mensaje de Linda McCartney “Hazte Vegetariano”   La triste noticia de la muerte de [Linda McCartney](https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=4895:people-music-macca&catid=213) unió a vegetarianos y no-vegetarianos en la petición de un homenaje duradero y digno por el llamamiento de su familia de “Hazte Vegetariano”.
