#  Unión Vegetariana Internacional - COALICION INTERNACIONAL PROPONE REFORMAS AL HAMBRE EN EL MUNDO

 | **COALICION INTERNACIONAL PROPONE REFORMAS AL HAMBRE EN EL MUNDO** *de IVU News 2001*  Roma, Italia, 28 de Mayo \[2002\] - Una coalición internacional que promueve soluciones basadas en vegetales al hambre en el mundo propuso amplias reformas a los delegados de la reunión de la Organización de Alimentos y Agricultura (FAO) celebrada en Roma. El propósito de la reunión era reparar un defectuoso proceso cuyo propósito era reducir el número de gente en estado de hambre crónica en el mundo a la mitad para el año 2015.  El documento final de la coalición propone varios puntos creativos para evitar el punto muerto:  Una de las causas básicas del hambre en el mundo además de los desastres naturales, las pestes y las guerras han sido los primeros poderes coloniales y actualmente los intereses corporativos del comercio de cultivos para la exportación, en lugar de suficiente, seguro y accesible alimento para la población local.  El Comercio Internacional no puede resolver el hambre en el mundo porque desplaza los limitados recursos agrícolas hacia la producción de cultivos para exportar, y la gente que no tiene acceso a los alimentos y otros productos básicos de la vida no tienen nada con que comerciar.  Las industrias cárnicas de occidente, enfrentadas con la conciencia pública sobre los impactos en la salud y las estrictas regulaciones medioambientales en sus países, buscan explotar los recursos naturales, la mano de obra barata y los potenciales mercados de los países de renta baja y deficiencia de alimentos (Low-Income Food-Deficient Nations, LIFDNs).  La definición de seguridad alimentaria como la disponibilidad sostenible de suficientes cantidades de alimentos nutritivos, seguros y asequibles lleva inevitablemente a elegir soluciones basadas en vegetales y evitar soluciones basadas en productos animales.  Las naciones prósperas deberían actuar con la obligación moral que tienen y proveer los medios necesarios para transportar y distribuir los excedentes de alimentos a los hambrientos del mundo y ayudar a organizar una producción local sostenible de suficientes alimentos vegetales nutritivos, seguros y asequibles. Deberían además reducir su propia dependencia de dietas basadas en productos animales para liberar productos alimenticios para los hambrientos.  Los países LIFDNs debería analizar cuidadosamente todas las ofertas de recursos para estar seguros de que éstos verdaderamente satisfacen sus necesidades, y no las de los intereses corporativos occidentales. Deberían insistir en construir una producción sostenible de suficientes alimentos vegetales nutritivos, seguros y asequibles cultivados localmente.  Además de distribuir el documento final a los delegados, los activistas de la coalición repartieron folletos ante la sede de la FAO en Roma.
