En favor de la creación de una nueva y compasiva cultura está la saludable dieta actual de la mayor parte de la China continental y la tradición budista de la no-violencia que la sustenta. Un factor que actúa en contra de este ideal ha sido la tentación de las colonias de importar lo peor antes que lo mejor de sus dominadores coloniales -- por ejemplo, el repugnante espectáculo de la corrida de toros en Macao para celebrar la inauguración del nuevo aeropuerto levantó fuertes protestas. Hong Kong ha prosperado a pesar de - y no gracias a - los estragos de la dieta occidental. En el sur de China, muchos ancianos se abstienen de carne el primer día del año nuevo para asegurarse una larga y feliz vida. En el segundo día, mucha gente realiza gestos simbólicos como devolver una carpa al río como signo de amor y compasión. En este día, los perros son tratados bien pues se cree que el segundo día del año nuevo lunar es el cumpleaños de todos los perros. Según ciertos textos antiguos, los primeros ocho días del año nuevo están consagrados así: el primero a los pollos, el segundo a los perros, el tercero a los cerdos, el cuarto a las ovejas, el quinto a los bueyes, el sexto a los caballos, el séptimo a los seres humanos y el octavo a los cereales. Se cree que si esos días son claros y brillantes las respectivas criaturas nacidas en tales días crecerán bien y estarán sanas. Si los días son oscuros, entonces estarán condenados. En el séptimo día de año nuevo los agricultores muestran sus productos, se prepara una bebida de celebración con siete tipos de verduras, y se come tallarines para la longevidad. El pintoresco festival de los faroles tiene lugar la primera luna llena del año lunar.
