La felicidad y gozo es doble cuando uno se da cuenta que ha sido portador del apoyo de cientos y miles de personas bien intencionadas de todo el globo - juntos promoviendo la causa que ha fundado esta organización - y por la que lucha. Y, el entusiasmo se triplica cuando uno descubre, yendo más lejos, que en todos estos años, el impacto del trabajo llevado a cabo, ha penetrado, en gran parte, en conseguir que la gente de todo el mundo se de cuenta de la verdad que está detrás de la causa por la que esta organización se está afanando por lograr. Hoy, con un gran sentido de introspección, vuelvo a utilizar el discurso que hice hace un par de años en 1994, en el último congreso Mundial Vegetariano. En aquel entonces, subrayé que la "velocidad" y la "voracidad" de la industria de la crianza de animales, está llevando a la humanidad a un camino el cual pronto se probaría ser autodestructivo; e hice incapié sobre la "necesidad" de compensar rápidamente esa locura de camino en el cual esa gente se halla. Amigos mios, las afirmaciones que hice aquel día no podrían haber tenido un toque de atención más real. En estos dos últimos meses habrás observado el lastimoso estado de los asuntos de la Industria de Carne Inglesa que la han llevado a hundirse. En las primeras décadas la industria de crianza animal en el Reino Unido debió haber pensado que alimentar al "ganado más exportable" con las "malgastadas y abundantes proteínas" recuperadas de los "despojos" de otros mataderos, podrían bien ser el camino para ganar esos ducados de oro de las divisas extrangeras. Pera las consecuencias de haber hecho eso han probado lo contrario. Las pobres criaturas han sido llevadas a la muerte sin tener absolutamente ninguna culpa, y además con la misma "velocidad" con la cual fueron forzadas a incrementar su prole, opción que, desde un primer momento, probablemente nunca optaron los propios animales. Y mientras ocurre eso en Gran Bretaña, en los EEUU las autoridades del Departamento de Alimentación se están preocupando sobre el incremento de la incidencia en los humanos de las enfermedades de los animales a través del consumo de carne contaminada. Esas autoridades creen que siendo más exigentes en las medidas de control, podrán prevenir estos casos en el futuro. EL presidente de los EEUU Bill Clinton, en su último discurso en la radio, recientemente mencionó que **"ante esta nueva contaminación de la carne y de los animales de granja, la protección será la más fuerte que ha habido nunca"**, y que - **"los padres deben saber cuando sirven una cena a base de pollo, que no están poniendo en peligro a sus hijos"**. La ironía de la afirmación "NO poner en peligro a los hijos' me hace preguntar - **"¿de qué?"** Sirviendo pollo en la cena, ¿ no se está exponiendo a los niños a enfermedades de sobrepeso, coronarias, ataques de corazón, osteoporosis? - ¡Y todos estas desgracias pueden ser muy bien evitadas cambiando a una dieta vegetariana! El director de la Sociedad de la Alimentación para el Centro de las Ciencias de Interés Público (una asociación de consumidores), está aparentemente convencido con las afirmaciones de Bill Clinton diciendo - "estas nuevas normas serán una **GUIA** para mejorar la seguridad de la carne y de las aves de corral". Por mi parte, podría haber sido una **"auténtica guia"** en la historia de los hombres si el señor Bill Clinton hubiera dado el paso de anunciar - "los padres deben saber que si NO sirven pollo en la cena de sus hijos, NO ponen en peligro a sus hijos". Pero, ¿podría alguien - que se diese cuenta de la fuerza económica que tiene el lobby de la industria de la carne - atreverse lo suficiente a decir eso? Unos pocos dias antes de dejar la India para atender este Congreso, me llegaron unos datos nuevos. El cuerpo de la Unión Europea **(Codex)** que estaba discutiendo las normas de calidad, ha aprobado matar a los animales con "Halal" - un método que conlleva una muerte lenta para los animales, causandoles un dolor extremo, agonía y crueldad; y eso fue aprobado pasando por alto las objeciones de paises como EEUU, Reino Unido y de algunos más. Esto ocurría a la vez que la **Alianza Nacional para los Animales** organizaba un rally en Washington - 23 de Junion de 1996, - por los derechos de los animales. Esta extremada crueldad en forma de matanza aprobada por -'Orden'- ha sido un gran shock para mi y para otros amantes de los animales de la India. Similar agonía habrán sentido gente de todo el mundo. Urgiría a cada uno de los aquí presentes en este Congreso a escribir una carta al Gabinete de Bruselas, Bélgica, - expresando tu angustia, y oposición a la carnicería con el método 'Halal'. Os diré muy brevemente que aparte del ancho apoyo y grandes subsidios que recibe la Industria de la Carne (incluyendo granjas, ganaderías, piscifactorias) por parte de los gobiernos, éstos están todavía asediados con problemas higiénicos y económicos. Puede que algunos de vosotros estéis enterados, que en uno de los programas de la BBC llamado 'HORIZON' se emitió un documental titulado **'LA LINEA RAPIDA EN LA CADENA ALIMENTICIA'**. Este documental describió claramente los sufrimientos de los pobres animales, como el pollo, pavos, cerdos, vacas, terneras, y narraba con hechos cómo la industria cárnica ha ignorado por completo los ciclos naturales de ests pobres criaturas. Por ejemplo, los pollos fueron forzados a crecer en solo 42 dias, siendo normalmente hacerlo de forma natural en 84 dias; significa eso la mitad de tiempo necesario para crecer sin intervención humana. Los resultados de esto fue que de una forma muy dura los animales fueron engordados para conseguir suficiente peso, pero sus corazones, pulmones y huesos no pudieron crecer al mismo ritmo con el que engordaban. Por esa razón estos animales no podían soportar cons us piernas su propio peso; jadeaban continuamente con lo que acumulaban toda clase de gases no deseados en sus pulmones y abdomen, y finalmente su crecimiento había sido tan afectado que estos animales no podían ya servir para ningún propósito **¡ni incluso como comida!** Aparte de todo el daño inflingido en estas criaturas, la mayor parte del público se tiene todavía que dar cuenta del daño más grande e impactante de las industrias que procesan estos animales. Y la peor parte de ello es que estamos obligados a gastar toda nuestra energía Científica en encontrar soluciones mejores y más nuevas para el tratamiento de los desechos que generan esas industrias, y en encontrar curas para las consiguientes enfermedades que sobrevienen a los humanos, suponiendo todo ello un colosal costo. Por ejemplo, en todo el ganado afectado con la BSE (la enfermedad de las vacas locas) que tienen que ser asesinadas, los científicos están preocupados en qué hacer con los restos; tirarlos al mar, incinerarlos, o qué? ¡Y todavía no sabemos si ello puede ser una bomba de relojería que estallará cuando nuestras futuras generaciones estén menos preparadas para ello! ¿No es toda esa búsqueda de soluciones a esos problemas un colosal gasto de energía nacional? Cuando el **'Guardian Weekly'** en su número del 28 de Abril de 1996, escribió: **"El 85% de la gente de los EEUU llegará a ser vegetariana en el año 2050"**; podría ser la más grande de las profecías, y para su realización hemos de dirigir nuestra política y acciones hacia la causa del Vegetarianismo. De nuevo, no podría haber un mensaje más grande para la gente que el de la Sra. Benazir Bhutto, la Primer Ministro de Pakistan, cuando dijo a sus ciudadanos recientemente: **"Una dieta vegetariana me mantiene en forma liberándome de las tensiones de la oficina. Todos los musulmanes deben abrazar el Vegetarianismo, o de otra forma no veremos nunca más una sola res".** Qué bonitas palabras - Siento que estas palabras deben ser enmarcadas y mostradas en cada oficina y hogar. Amigos, el despertar en efecto ha amanecido! Actualmente, me siento un poco más feliz de que en todo el mundo, la cordura de llevar una dieta vegetariana, borrando del menú de cada uno la carne de los animales, ha cobrado un gran impulso más rápido.. Hoy, nosotros tenemos a Francis Moore Lappe, John Robbins, Jeremy Rifkins, Dr. Colin Campbell y a muchos más que han hecho grandes esfuerzos para enseñarnos que el camino que la industria de la carne esta siguiendo únicamente puede ser destructivo. Ellos nos han enseñado cómo estas industrias agotan todos los recursos naturales y el potencial que tiene la madre tierra para cuidar del futuro de la población mundial. Hoy, nosotros tenemos al Dr. Michael Klaper, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Neal Barnard y a muchos otros, que nos han enseñado cómo la dieta vegetariana ayuda a restablecer la normalidad a nuestro corazón, a nuestro sistema digestivo, a nuestro hígado y riñones, y hace que nuestra vida merezca la pena vivirla. Hoy, tenemos a muchas Organizaciones para los Derechos de los Animales que nos hablan de las miserias de esas criaturas mudas, esas criaturas que están llorando por ayuda silenciosamente, y ese lloro está siendo elocuentemente ensordecido; y nos muestran todo eso para conseguir ser libre y ser uno con la naturaleza. Hoy, tenemos a cientos de científicos que, con sus pruebas obtenidas a lo largo de muchos años, nos están probando que si no enmendamos nuestra forma de vivir, viviremos en una atmósfera áltamente polucionada y que lisiará pronto nuestras vidas. Hoy, podemos ver documentales científicos en nuestra televisión que nos enseñan qué es lo que ocurre en todo el mundo y nos detallan los efectos dañinos de la industria cárnica. Con el gran apoyo que hemos ganado de doctores, científicos, expertos medioambientales y varias organizaciones bien intencionadas, siento que nuestros esfuerzos deben ser ahora redoblados en: - educar a los gobiernos de todo el mundo, y si es necesario usuando medidas persuasorias, sobre el daño causado por esta industria basada en animales; y decir a los legisladores que si parasen de animar y ayudar a la crianza de animales, las ganancias que una nación podría llegar a cosechar serían diversas, - ilustrar a las más jóvenes generaciones que han sido acostumbradas al consumo de la carne, y decirles que si no cambian sus hábitos ahora, el precio que estarán pagando sin darse cuenta por permanecer asidos a la industria cárnica será asombrosamente alto. - liberar a la gente todavía inflexible de la comercializada y despersonalizada vida que están siguiendo, y hacerles darse cuenta que cambiando a una dieta vegetariana, estarían aportando sentido y gratitud a la comida que están comiendo, lo que serviría en cambiar su salud y felicidad y expresar su respeto genuinamente hacia la vida. John Robbins ha expresado esta belleza en su libro, - "TODOS PUEDEN ESTAR ALIMENTADOS" - "Hay pocos momentos donde las dimensiones espirituales, políticas, personales y ecológicas de nuestras vidas se encuentran tan completas como cuando nos sentamos para desayunar, comer y cenar.". Siendo de la India, os puedo decir que los Rishis de la India tuvieron la visión, que estuvo miles de años adelantada a sus tiempos, de clasificar las dietas Satvilk, Rojasik y Tamasic - La comida Satvik es lo que hoy llamamos 'Vegana' pero con algunos productos de la leche incluidos. También os sorprendería saber que ellos clasificaron 225 tipos de existencias humanas y las definieron. Sus descubrimientos y lo que dijeron bien merecen un estudio serio. "La extraordinaria importancia de nuestra comida, sabiduría y de nuestras acciones ... (nos mostrarán) ... qué es lo que ganaremos no sólo en términos de salud individual, sino también para los niños, para los menos afortunados en este mundo, para el futuro de la humanidad y para los sistemas esenciales de la ecología de los cuales toda la vida de la tiera depende". En el camino de ilustrar a la gente en los variados aspectos del trabajo que todos hemos decidido acometer, nosotros en la India estamos en el proceso de formar una compañía pública sin ánimo de lucro denominada **Ahimsaa Research Foundation**. La Fundación estará dirigida profesionalmente para conducir las investigaciones sobre hábitos dietéticos, nutrición, bienestar de los animales, granjas orgánicas, ecología, medio ambiente y más; y su información sería difundida entre la gente y legisladores para mejorar la vida de todos los seres vivientes. Amigos, lo que tengo en mente ha sido expresado por John Robbins en uno de sus capítulos de su libro el cual también me gustaría remarcar - "No sabemos todavía cómo sería vivir en una sociedad verdaderamente saludable y llena de compasión. Pero existen algunas cosas que están ahora disponibles para nosotros.
