From then, it became increasingly independent and in 1997 decided to become a completely separate organisation. An agreement has now been reached which allows EVU to retain full autonomy whilst once again representing all the IVU Member Societies in Europe. The agreement now is very simple: Join EVU and Get IVU free! Any full member society in Europe can now pay just one annual subscription to EVU, and automatically qualifies for full membership of IVU. This does not apply to Associate Member Societies, or to Individual or Business Supporters, who are still welcome to support IVU, or EVU, or both. Please distribute it widely through your own networks, email groups, journals etc. Careful translations into your own language where appropriate would be very much appreciated.* The International Council of the International Vegetarian Union wishes to bring to the attention of member societies and other interested parties the growing awareness deserved by the connection between, on one hand, the production of meat and other animal-based products and, on the other hand, environmental destruction. While this connection has long been known, recent reports, such as the FAO's "Livestock's Long Shadow", have strengthened the case and increased public consciousness of the fact that vegetarianism is an eco-friendly choice, due to the link between livestock farming and climate change and to links between livestock farming and deforestation and habitat destruction, water and energy resource depletion, and food conversion inefficiency and waste. The IVU website offers one place to learn more about why vegetarianism is an eco-friendly choice and about how to inform the public about this. The environment, like all issues, is a complex one. We urge Ms. Livni, should she become prime minister, to make it a major priority of her administration to help increase awareness of the many reasons for considering a shift toward vegetarian (and preferably vegan) diets. This would have the following benefits: It would help reduce the epidemic of diseases afflicting many Israelis, and thus reduce Israel's soaring health costs, freeing money for other societal needs at a time when funds for these needs have been cut; It would help reduce global warming and other environmental threats to Israel. A 2006 UN report indicated that 'livestock' agriculture emits more greenhouse gases (in CO2 equivalents) than all the cars and other means of transportation worldwide combined (18% vs. 13.5%). A 2007 report from the Israel Union for Environmental Defense projected that, unless major changes soon occur, global warming will cause severe heat waves, reduced rainfall of up to 30%, major storms, and flooding of the coastal plain where moat Israelis live by a rising Mediterranean. It would result in the more efficient use of resources. While Israel is facing the worst drought in its history, animal-based diets require up to 14 times as much water as vegan diets, and also require far more energy and other resources.
