The aftermath killed more than 20,000 villagers, destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres of cropland and cattle, and left more than 1 million of Orissa's people homeless, hungry and dazed. ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/news/march2000/relief3.jpg) *Huge 50 gallon pots were used to cook the thousands of meals served daily from the Food for Life boats and trucks* The situation was chaotic. The local government relied heavily on whatever volunteer relief groups were available. The day after the cyclone hit, the local Food for Life (FFL) service in Bhubanesvara swung into action. Volunteers in four trucks and boats filled with freshly cooked vegetarian stew (Khechudi) and drinking water went out in search of survivors in the most affected areas. Passing thousands of dead bodies on the road side or floating past their boat, Food for Life was able to distribute more than one million vegetarian meals, 40,000 bottles of water, blankets, clothes, and first aid treatment to the needy. Food for Life operates in more than 50 countries worldwide and is the world's largest vegan/vegetarian food relief. Material published does not necessarily reflect the views of the editor or the policy of the International Vegetarian Union. A note on this archive. The history section of this website is drawn from a body of legacy content originally compiled by John Davis, former manager of the International Vegetarian Union. It represents his curation of historical material, and in places includes passages written by him directly. Over the years, the IVU website has migrated between several different hosting servers. In the course of these migrations, a number of PDF files were unfortunately lost, and **some links to PDF documents may no longer function**. Where this is the case, we have chosen to leave the original link text in place, as it may itself carry information of historical value. - Hits: 1291 ## Schema ```json {"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=5683:news-march2000-orissa&catid=240","url":"https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=5683:news-march2000-orissa&catid=240","name":"Vegetarian News - Vegetarian Food Relief in Orissa!","inLanguage":"en","isPartOf":[{"@id":"https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html#archive"},{"@id":"https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=4367:members-council-paul-turner&catid=208"}],"publisher":{"@id":"https://ivu.org/#organization"},"description":"IVU News Vegetarian Food Relief in Orissa!
