**Part 4: Message to Friends Abroad**

 Vegetarian Society and The London Vegetarian Society, supported by their affiliated societies in Great Britain, are proud to be hosts for the 18th World Vegetarian Congress - the fourth on which an I.V.U. Congress has been held in England. We shall look forward to welcoming vegetarians from all over the world and hope that a useful and happy time will be enjoyed.

International congresses give opportunities to renew friendships and to make new ones. It is essential for peace and progress on all levels that nations should meet to share experiences, share new knowledge, and to inspire one another to greater endeavour.

Vegetarianism has the advantage of being non-political and non-sectarian. There are no frontiers beyond which its benefits cannot be felt. It does harm to none, and to the contrary will bring untold benefit to all, not least the creature kingdom which suffers a cruel and unnecessary exploitation - not only in rearing, but in slaughter, and vivisection to offset the effects caused by a wrong diet.

We know from experience that vegetarianism will bring better physical health and more alert minds. We know it has very real economic advantages in agriculture on a world and national scale. We know it offers the best way of solving the growing world food problem, and that our example of fitness without fleshfoods will furnish proof for those who may be nervous about abandoning meat. We believe vegetarianism is a more ethical way of life more in keeping with the best human aspirations.

These things are among the subjects we shall discuss, and we hope that our deliberations will lead to ways and means of publicizing the valuable knowledge we have gathered in our dietetic pioneering over the last 117 years or so.

We believe that individuals meeting face to face at an inter-national congress, discussing problems frankly and in friendship, is one of the most valuable ways of inspiring universal brotherhood. The knowledge that others, of different race, of different creeds, are, nevertheless, working for the same ideals as ourselves is the most stimulating tonic we know. We shall, therefore, be most grateful for the presence of anyone willing to help build our vegetarian world by discussing how best we can utilize the resources and forces at our disposal.

The British Vegetarian Youth Movement will be there in force and will have a special time at their disposal. There will be strong contingents from India, and we hope , from all the countries with which we are associated.  His Excellency the High Commisioner for India (Dr. J.N. Mehta) has kindly agreed to open the Congress.  A remarkably interesting band of speakers has already agreed togive lectures, and the programme is now being prepared. There will be many social activities, some outings, and since we shall be living as a community with plenty of space, the evenings will include dancing and entertainments., with a final Fancy Dress Ball.
