Thomas Schwarz,** Germany Biography: Thomas Schwarz, born 1974, studied education in Düsseldorf and Essen. He is a scientific co-operator in the education sector and a teacher at the centre for high school and university quality development at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He is currently preparing his dissertation on “Rock Culture and Veganism on the Youth Scene“ Lecture title: **Youth Culture, Music and Social Criticism** Abstract: Music as aesthetic and experiential expression is an important part of youth culture and a virtually ideal medium for social criticism. In the tradition of political protests, the lyrics express social criticism often associated with Utopian demands for a new social order, In various music-oriented youth cultures music is a central medium to spread the idea of animal rights as well as veganism and vegetarianism and to denounce the exploitation of animals for human ends as ethically unacceptable. Selected examples will be presented to illustrate these issues. Vegetarian for 30 years. Family doctor in general practice since 1981. President, Scientific Committee of the Italian Vegetarian Society. President, Nonviolent Medicine. Founder, Science for Ethical Nutrition. Married to animal rights lawyer Emanuela Pasetto. Three children aged 22, 20 and14, all vegetarian. When the Verona city authorities adopted a policy of killing stray dogs he chained himself up in a kennel (dog house) at the municipal dog pound until the policy was reversed and the dogs were saved. He has also taken part in numerous scientific conferences on vegetarian nutrition. Title of the lecture: **The Science of Ethical Nutrition – an Association of Health Professionals bringing Ethics and Non-violence together with Nutritional Science** Abstract: A new diet model to promote not just individual health but a way of eating that respects the planet and all its inhabitants. Doctors and nutritionists have traditionally avoided these wider issues, but no patient can be truly well in a world devastated by environmental pollution, animal suffering and human starvation. We aim to convince colleagues of the role of a plant based diet in reducing energy consumption and animal exploitation while combating human diseases of both poverty and affluence so that doctors can pass on to patients an ethical, ecological, cultural and scientific message that will improve the quality and quantity of life not just for humans but for the planet on which we live and all with whom we share it. He is one of the founders of the IWÖ Institute for Economy and Ecology (1985) and Earth Day (1992). In 1983 he gained practical experience in a Swiss vegan organic gardening business. By 1986 he was giving lectures on organic gardening at Düsseldorf University. This has always been the main thrust of his work. For Earth Day 2004 he issued a European appeal for organic and animal-friendly farming. He works for a life insurance company. Lecture title: **Animal-friendly Organic Farming and our Future on Earth** Abstract: Our relationship to animals, especially farm animals, is a very important factor for our future life and indeed our survival on planet Earth. If we succeed in convincing a broad majority of people to respect the life of farm animals, many ecological threats (climate change, pollution, etc) may be diminished. This must include an end to the artificial over-breeding of animals and a change in our eating habits. This lecture presents an overview of animal-friendly forms of agriculture, particularly vegan organic farming, and the effect on the environment. She is also the leader of the BKWSU Institute in Europe and lives in Europe since 30 years, in Frankfurt/Germany since 15 years. Lecture title: **Body, Soul, Mind and Matter** Abstract: There is a deep connection between pure food and pure matter. Through pure food we can influence our health, our mind and nature. Our body is a wonderful gift given by nature and the elements. Traditional and spiritual people have learnt to look through outward appearances to the underlying energy that vitalizes the physical body and promotes physical, emotional and spiritual wholeness. The recognition of a life energy that animates all living things is not merely a philosophical belief. It is also a practical approach to life and healing that creates responsibility towards the elements, nature and the future healing of our planet. This was followed by an interest in existential, health and environmental issues. He studied natural therapies and worked in various health centres including Föllingegården where vegan nutrition has been studied. Eric studied Nature Cure with the legendary Kenneth S. Jaffrey in Australia. He now teaches Self-Healing, including plant based nutrition, raw and living foods as well as practising Naprapathy and other natural therapies. Lecture title: **Nature Cure – a Holistic Natural Living and Self-Healing System** Abstract: Nature Cure can be defined as the teachings of natural living and natural health care. It teaches the basic conditions that are required for health and healing. Disease is basically the reaction of mind and body to the departure from some of the conditions necessary for total health. Health is the natural state of body and mind that it ought to be our birthright to enjoy. This talk will give an introduction to Nature Cure, its history and philosophy. It will deal with the causes of disease, the basic requirements of health, the healing cycle, natural therapy and diagnosis, natural lifestyle and about the power that heals and keeps us alive and how we can optimise it. Knowledge is the key that enables us to build health. At the age of nine he moved to Aden. In 1962 he arrived in the United Kingdom. He obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from London University and started working for the Post Office. After a spell in the engineering sector he joined the Royal Mail’s Marketing Department. Through rapid promotions Jayant he became its Director, Marketing – Developing New Services. Born into a Gujarati vegetarian family, Jayant had succumbed to meat eating while in the UK. Seeing the passion of a vegan Englishman was enough to return him to vegetarianism. Jayant is married to Rekha and they have one daughter, Rahnak. Lecture title: **A Strategic Approach to the Eradication of Animal Cruelty, World Hunger and Environmental Devastation** Abstract: The aim of the presentation is to provide tools and a strategic framework for all delegates to be deployed at global, regional, national and personal levels. My presentation at the 37th IVU World Vegetarian Congress dealt with the environment and took so-called meat-eating environmentalists to task. I hoped that vegetarians would take over the environmental movement in a big way but alas, not much seems to have happened in the intervening two years. I am disappointed and angry that billions of our fellow creatures are dying, fellow humans are going hungry, forests are being decimated and we are helpless. We need to do something urgently. At congresses we talk to one another about the same issues, but we have to target the meat eaters and persuade them of their folly. A coordinated strategic approach is needed by all of us.
