Registration Questions & Answers

When is the conference?
It is set for July 29 - August 4 at the Conference Center at Pitt-Johnstown on the picturesque campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, Pennsylvania, USA. The campus is a 650-acre mountaintop wildlife preserve with 40 acres of hiking trails.

Registrants are offered three packages:

FULL: July 29 - August 4 (seven days, six nights)
The program begins Monday afternoon, July 29th.

MIDWEEK: July 31 - August 4 (five days, four nights)
Program begins Wednesday afternoon, July 31st.

WEEKEND: August 2 - 4 (three days, two nights)
The program begins Friday evening, August 2nd.

The education program for all packages concludes Sunday afternoon.

What do the fees include?
The conference fees cover:
* The entire educational program including classes, lectures, workshops and discussions. Also included are films, entertainment and use of certain athletic areas.
* Total-vegetarian meals and on-campus housing which includes a twin bed, linens and towels.

What will the meals be like?
All meals will be total-vegetarian designed to meet the needs of a variety of diets. They will be prepared under direction of NAVS' catering staff and gold-medal winning vegetarian chef Ken Bergeron.

Which meals are included?
Meals are provided as follows:
FULL: The first meal served will be lunch on Monday, July 29th.
MIDWEEK: First meal served will be lunch on Wednesday, July 31st.
WEEKEND: First meal served will be breakfast on Saturday, August 3rd.

The Saturday banquet is included in all packages.
The last meal served will be Sunday lunch.

Are there housing choices?
Yes, you may choose:
* Non-air-conditioned traditional student housing with two rooms sharing bathroom facilities. (Available to all registrants.)
* Air-conditioned deluxe hotel-like accommodations with private bath in the newly built Living-Learning Center. (Available to FULL and MIDWEEK registrants in double occupancy only).

Can I get a roommate?
NAVS can assign a roommate if you are attending alone and would like to qualify for the double-occupancy rate. If you arrange to share a room with someone, please indicate his or her name on your registration form.

Can I stay off campus?
Yes, contact NAVS for off-campus registration and meal rates.

How and when do I pay?
1. Choose the FULL, MIDWEEK, or WEEKEND package. Select a single room, double room. or double room with air-conditioning and private bath. See above for restrictions.
2. E-mail asking for registation assistance or call NAVS at (518) 568-7970 and leave a message with your name, mailing address, and phone number. No personal checks will be accepted on campus.

When is check-in time?
FULL program check-in: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., Monday, July 29th
MIDWEEK check-in: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., Wednesday, July 31st
WEEKEND check-in: 5 p.m. - 11 p.m., Friday, August 2nd

What is there for kids?
We offer special programs for children, youths and teens! A Children's Center is offered for attendees aged 2 to 12, beginning each morning after breakfast, when the educational program begins. Mealtimes and evening social times not included. Parents enrolled in the Full and Midweek program will be assigned a single session of three to four hours to assist NAVS staff in the center. Weekenders will be assigned a two hour session.

How do I get there?
Johnstown is in Southwest Pennsylvania, about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh, 200 miles east of Cleveland, 239 miles west of Philadelphia, 330 miles west of New York, 184 miles north of Baltimore and 493 miles from Boston.

Plane: The nearby Johnstown Cambria County Airport offers regularly scheduled USAir Express Flights via the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport.

Bus and train: Johnstown is served by county buses, Greyhound and Amtrak.

Van service: The Conference Center offers free local van service from the Johnstown airport bus and train station. Van service is available to and from the Pittsburgh airport.

Driving: The campus is accessible from Pennsylvania Turnpike via Route 219 or Interstate 70 via Route 56.

Any restrictions?
Smoking is NOT permitted in dining areas, classrooms or other public area reserved for NAVS use.
We regret that no pets of any kind are permitted on campus.
