'Vegetarianism is the Way'
an unforgettable visual, cultural and gastronomic experience

My self, Pushpendra Kumar Jain is the Founder Chairman of the Vegetarian Society of Botswana, and IVU Regional Secretary for Africa since 1997. The VSB was founded in 1995 with the efforts of few concerned individual, and is a non-profit making, service body registered in Botswana. We have been reasonably active in and around Gaborone, where the Society is based, but have not been able to reach beyond. For activities, and of course my photo, link to Botswana page through the IVU web.

More on personal side, I was born in India (Saharanpur, Western UP provinve, about 180 km north-west of Delhi) 52 years ago. I have been vegetarian (not a vegan but no eggs) all my life, and was brought up thus in a religious Jain Family. Got a M.Sc. in Physics from Meerut University, India (1967) and a Ph.D. in Physics from University of Connecticut, USA (1975). I was married to Priti in 1978, have three children: Gauri (daughter, 1981), Shilpi (daughter, 1987) and Shitesh (son, 1989).

On professional side, I am, presently, a Senior lecturer in Physics at the University of Botswana, working as an expatriate on two-years renewable contracts. I shall be completing 12 years in Botswana in Fabruary, and shall go on to serve my 7th contract when I return from CM-Congress. I have also taught at the University of Zambia, Lusaka (4 years), Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, India (4 years), National Physical Laboratory, Delhi, India; UCONN, USA (part-time as a Ph.D. student: 1970-1975); I.I.T., Delhi, India. My area of specialisation is materials science and Renewable Energy. Have contributed to these fields through scholarly publications and presentations at the International Congresses. Have traveled to over 30 countries on official and personal trips covering Americas, Europe, Pacific region and Africa. This will be my first time in Thailand.

Personal Interests: Vegetarianism is so close to my heart and soul, that I fail to understand as to why the rest of the world cant not understand this simple Law of the Nature. I collect coins, used phone cards and any junk I can lay my hands on. If you have some, bring to CM to swop with similar items from Botswana. I am also the Founder of the Energy Society of Botswana, which has been doing reasonably well for the last 10 years or so.

I guess, I have exposed myself fully, perhaps even more than was expected of me. Shall look forward to knowing the rest of the team.

With best wishes and regards: Pushpendra (Push or PK in short).
