Early Development of IVU Regions

These are extracts from the minutes, agendas and other surviving documents, of World Congresses between 1957 - when the Regions are first mentioned - to 1971. Comments in [square brackets] have been added, everything else is original.

1957 [from the minutes]

Regional Secretaries: It was agreed that three Secretaries should be appointed to work in the following regions:- India and the East; America and the West; and in Britain for Europe and the North; under the direction of the Executive Committee. That funds should be allocated to the Indian and USA Secretaries for working capital.

1958 [from the Vegetarian World Forum, July 1958, - edited by the General Secretary]

AT a recent Committee Meeting in London and in accordance with a direction made at the Indian World Vegetarian Congress the following appointments have been made:-

Hon. General Secretary - Geoffrey L. Rudd, c/o The Vegetarian Society, Bank Square, Wilmslow, Cheshire, England. This office will cover Europe and other countries not covered by the other two Hon. Secretaries, and co-ordinate the work generally.

Hon. Secretary for the Americas - Dr. Dastur F. Bode, 4511 Finley Ave., Apt. 6, Los Angeles 27, California, U.S.A. Dr. Bode will co-ordinate the work in America, Canada and South America.

Hon. Secretary for India and The East - Shri J. N. Mankar, 149 Shroff Bazar, Bombay 2, India. This appointment will cover India and the East generally.

1960 [from the minutes]

The Bi-Annual Reports for the two years ended 31 December 1959 were given by the General Secretary (Mr Rudd) and the Regional Secretary for India and the East (Mr Mankar) and these were approved.

The Financial Report for the two years ended 31 December 1959 was given by the Treasurer (Mr Pedersen) and was approved. The regional Secretary for India and the East presented the Indian Congress and Secretarial accounts and these were approved.

Regional Secretaries Appointed: Mr J N Mankar (India and the East), Dr Jesse Mercer Gehman (The Americas)

1963 [from the minutes]

Regional Secretaries: Mr J N Mankar (India and The East); Dr Jesse Mercer Gehman (USA) were re-elected.

1965 [from the minutes]

General secretary: The committee re-appointed Mr Geoffrey L.Rudd, and re-appointed the Regional Secretaries: Mr J N Mankar (India & the East), Dr Jesse Marcer Gehman (The Americas) (Dr Gehman's new address is POB 68 Duncannon Rd., 3, Pennsylvania 17028, USA)

An interesting new development was the suggestion that smaller International Gatherings might be held in any country so that holidaymakers could gather at an agreed centre for pleasure and some lectures - the country concerned bearing the cost and making the arrangements, Portugal was asked to try to organize such a centre in 1966, and an offer was made to arrange a mountain climbing holiday centre in Switzerland by Mr Karl Bosshard of Zurich.

The Secretaries remained the same: Mr.B.J.Gunn-King, as Hon.General Secretary; Shri J.N.Mankar, as Hon.Regional Secretary for India and the East, and Dr.J.M.Gehman, as Hon.Regional Secretary for the Americas.
