Joyce D'Silva took her degree at Dublin University (Trinity College) and taught in India and later in Essex.


She has worked for Compassion in World Farming since 1985 and became its Director in 1991.
Joyce has written reports on BST, veal farming and modern farm animal breeding technologies. She has written chapters on the genetic engineering of farm animals for three books, including "Animal Biotechnology and Ethics", published last year by Chapman & Hall and "The Meat Business - devouring a hungry planet" published in June 1999 by Earthscan. An article on BSE, which she wrote for an American magazine, was named one of the top 25 censored stories of 1994.

She had addressed the BVA's Annual Congress, as well as the Intergroup on Animal Welfare at the European Parliament. In February 2001, Joyce gave oral evidence to the New Zealand government's Royal Commission on Genetic Engineering.
