Standing Orders of the International Council


The IVU International Council is conducting ongoing discussions on an email discussion list. This is a record of decisions made via that forum (note: these are not 'minutes', there is obviously a great deal of discussion - this a just a brief record of decisions). If any IVU Member or Supporter wishes to express any views on these Standing Orders, please contact a member of the International Council

August 2002

  • It is agreed that IVU increases the fee payable to John Davis for his webmaster duties with effect from 1st August 2002 and allocates a further sum per year for the use of specialised web designers as and when required. Council authorisation of this expenditure is subject to the webmaster explaining to council the intended use of the funding and obtaining several quotes for the work.
    There will be a new agreement with the webmaster for three months notice on either side and he will be classed as a co-opted council member without voting rights.

  • That David Román is appointed as IVU Deputy Webmaster
  • That Stephen Walsh is appointed as IVU Science Coordinator

March 2002

  • That IVU set up a new system of grants to be administered by the IVU council as it sees appropriate. Such grants will be for the promotion of vegetarianism by an established or new group who are members of IVU and can be used for all purposes deemed fitting by Council at the time on a system of majority votes. It is proposed the sum initially available for such grants shall be up to a total of £3000 per annum ( this figure to be revised as and when appropriate by council on the advice of the Treasurer) and for the first year only a sum of up to £5000 in total shall be available up until the end of March 2003. All groups shall apply using the IVU Grant Guidelines, which will be available from the IVU website (www.ivu.org/members/grants.html). Where possible, interested groups should establish contact with and obtain support from with their IVU Regional Representative (http://www.ivu.org/members/council/contacts.html).

October 2001

  • That IVU will pay VSUK 50% of the registration costs for the IVU webmaster to attend the World Vegetarian Congress at Edinburgh, VSUK already having agreed to pay the other 50%.

August 2001

  • That the contract with VUNA, now shown as Appendix F to the Bylaws, is agreed, subject to ratification by the members.

April 2001

  • That IVU becomes a company limited by guarantee registered in the UK as the first step towards becoming a UK registered charity. (Memorandum of Association and Articles of Association - to operate alongside the Constitution pending ratification by the membership)

  • That Marly Winckler, of Brazil, is appointed Regional Secretary for Latin America

    (this is an amendement to Congress Proposals & Organisation)
  • The meeting of member societies will be included in the programme by the congress organisers and shall be at a time when no other congress activities, other than cooking demos, and, possibly videos, are on the programme.

March 2000

  1. that the following is added to the 'Congress Guidelines' document:

    Registration Fees for members of the International Council
    (note: the registration fee does not include travel, accommodation or food)

    1. IVU is authorised to meet the cost of registration for each council member attending a World Vegetarian Congress. The precise amount to be determined by the full council prior to each congress.
    2. The registration fee for each councillor shall be deducted by the hosting organisation and invoiced to IVU at the end of the Congress.
    3. All the above may apply to any staff or contract employee of IVU at the discretion of the Council.

  2. that the amount to be deducted (for the 2000 Congress) be the full registration fee of 358 Canadian Dollars (= 243 US dollars / 155 UK pounds at March 2000 exchange rate)
  3. that the above reduction also apply (for the 2000 Congress) to the IVU contract employee (the IVU Webmaster)

  • That the official postal address for IVU shall be the address of The Vegetarian Society UK (subject to formal approval by the VSUK Council at a later date)..
January 2000
  • That the accounts for the 1999 World Vegetarian Congress are now finalised, and the small surplus will be transferred to the Thai Vegetarian Union as agreed.
  • That John Davis will be employed as part-time webmaster, and will therefore resign from the International Council, but will be invited to attend all meetings in an advisory, non-voting, capacity (in accordance with Section 6 of the Constitution).

  • The Members of IVU voted for the new constitution and bylaws which came into immediate effect on October 31
September 1999
  1. That a postal/email ballot of IVU full-member societies be arranged during October 1999, in respect of the proposed constitution and bylaws, with 28 days for replies from the date the ballot forms are sent out.
  2. That the International Council recommends to the members that they approve the adoption of the constitution and bylaws.

  • That Claude Pasquini is re-designated as 'IVU Liaison Officer for Europe'.

  • That Tina Fox is designated as IVU Membership Secretary.

  • That David Pye be appointed as IVU treasurer.

  • Decisions recorded in all minutes of General Meetings and International Council meetings to be made available on the website, backdated as far as possible.
  • That Katharina Bless be designated as the 'Nature Therapies Co-ordinator' on behalf of the International Council
  • That Dr.Mitsuru Kakimoto be designated as the 'Research Co-ordinator' on behalf of the International Council
