some notes from Emmanuel Eyoh,
IVU Africa Regional Coordinator, based in Nigeria:
I have just returned from Accra, Ghana in connection with the Africa
Vegetarian Congress [West Africa region] in that country Oct 30-Nov 1, 2009.
I held meetings with Korblah-Wisdom, Nathan Adu and others in Ghana on the
congress. The Vegetarian Society of Ghana is strong on the ground and
because of their activities; there is a vegetarian desk in the Ministry of
Health. Nathan Adu the founder of the Vegetarian Society of Ghana is
technically the leader of the vegetarian movement in Ghana. He runs a
successful vegetarian restaurant where I had my lunch. The restaurant can
meet up any international standard. There is a vegetarian library, shop, bar
and other facilities. The leaders of the vegetarian movement in Ghana have
agreed to work together to host a successful congress in Oct.
They recently held a yoga and vegetarian conference which attracted
thousands of participants. They plan to make the vegetarian congress much
more successful than the yoga seminar. Watch out for the congress programme
and others details soon on the congress website.
Please kindly note the following:
Feeding is going to be free.
Free accommodations for participants coming from outside Ghana. It will be
general purpose accommodations at hostels of some organisations. People
that require private accommodation in a hotel will have to pay. The
organizers will send in the cost for such accommodation.
There will be cooking demonstration on how to cook varieties of African
Vegetarian dishes from different countries.
Awards ceremony-We plan to recognize deserving individuals and organizations
that have contributed towards the growth and development of the vegetarian
movement in Africa.
There will be Homeless Feeding or Food for Life as part of the vegetarian
movement and IVU Africa social responsibility to the people of Ghana. Free
vegetarian food will served to needy persons and some orphanages in Accra. And finally there will a Carnival Walk in Accra to mark World Vegan Day.
The congress will take place in Accra main town and in a good location. I saw some of the halls and they are good for such events. They need funds to book the hall soon.
The organising commitee for the congress intend to invite the president of the country to declare the congress open.
We invite everyone to come to Accra ,Ghana for the Africa Vegetarian
Congress 2009.
